It was composed within the space of only three days, from 21 to 23 December 1831, so that Fanny and Wilhelm Hensel could give it to the dedicatee Ulrike Peters as a Christmas present. The piano version of Hero und Leander, published here as a first edition to mark the 210th anniversary of Fanny HenselaEUR(tm)s birth in the commemorative year 2015, makes it possible to put on a performance of the scene irrespective of the availability of an orchestra.
