Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Woodwind Trio - Intermediate
Composed by Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809). Arranged by Pat Spence. Classical Period, European, Birthday, Wedding, Recital. Score, Set of Parts. 24 pages. Published by Piper Publications (S0.309639).

Item Number: S0.309639

This Divertimento was originally written for baryton trio (see below) and has been edited and arranged for flute, oboe & clarinet by Pat Spence. It is suitable for players of moderate accomplishment (about grade 5 - 6 ABRSM) and advanced players alike. Although Haydn composed a total of 126 baryton trios, his inventiveness was never lacking. The Divertimentos make excellent concert pieces and are also ideal to play at social functions such as weddings. They all have three movements, in this case Presto assai, Andante & Menuetto & Trio.

This edition was prepared from parts made by the copyist Johann Elssler (1769 - 1843). Although this is an arrangement, the phrasings and dynamics of the original copied parts are retained. All edits are shown in parenthesis or dashed lines. Staccato dots have been applied throughout passages where the style has been indicated at the beginning. Accompaniment figures have been adapted to be more appropriate for wind instruments.

The music has been transposed up one or sometimes. 2 octaves to suit the range of the wind instruments.

Haydn began working for the Esterházy family in 1761. At this time Prince Niklaus played the viola da gamba but, in 1765, he purchased a baryton, an instrument similar to the viola da gamba with an additional set of lower strings which vibrated sympathetically when the instrument was played with a bow, enriching the tone. Haydn’s task was to provide music for the prince to play on this new instrument which he did mainly in the form of trios for baryton, viola and cello in which Haydn probably played the viola. In total Haydn composed 123 trios for this combination and many other works which included the baryton. The prince was delighted and paid Haydn well. The trios were collated in sets of 24 which were richly bound. The prince’s increasing competence on the baryton can be observed by the complexity of the parts. The trios generally have 3 movements, always ending with a minuet and trio but despite their number, Haydn’s originality, wit and melodic genius are always in evidence.

Sadly the baryton was never a popular instrument so this large part of Haydn’s output has remained virtually unknown to musicians and audiences. The Trios written for instruments closely matched in pitch lend themselves readily to arrangement for combinations of more popular instruments which will enable more people to enjoy them.
