Using a familiar text from Isaiah, this SATB piece is oneyou’ll be pulling out again and again. Do you enjoy partner songs?  Vocallines are melodic and interesting, and they build to a four-part partnertreatment in the final section, most effective with creative use of dynamicsbetween vocal parts.  Suitable for avariety of church settings, it is a song of courage and strength ("They shallrun and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.").  Scored for SATB choir with organ, with somedivisi.

Judy Coder’s Have You Not Known? is a delightful and well-crafted piece. It is based on the final portion of Isaiah 40, which focuses on the sovereignty of God.The appeal of this work comes from its rhythmic pulse and use of pitch. The 4/4 meter is...

used extensively, with a brief opening in 3 and four measures in 6 near the middle of the piece. Paired with a never-changing tempo (quarter = 96), Coder creates a gentle driving force in both the voice and organ parts that is pleasantly infectious. The tonal center is in F mostly, with some well-placed altered and borrowed tones, which help to create some harmonic surprises. In addition, during the final twelve measures of the piece, each voice part has its own two-measure motive--independent in pitch, rhythm, and text--which repeats and builds to an uplifting ff final cadence on the final words, “they fly!”Have You Not Known? will make an excellent addition to the music library of any church choir. Highly recommended!

Judy Coder has written a fine, effective setting of a familiar text from Isaiah 40. It has lyrical elements, rhythmic life, and a good shape. It will be a useful addition to the repertoire of better church choirs and other choral organizations.
