HAPPY BIRTHDAY
Technical solutions (hand positions and finger numbers) are presented here, making this a "how to play" edition for this subline music.
PRIMER LEVEL arrangement for FIRST YEAR STUDENTS
C Position and Middle C Position, plus F Position for RH
For beginning students, this page can be today's lesson all by itself.
Give yourself a break, and give them the gift of being able to play "Happy Birthday".

scottnotes/V are not just sheet music, they are complete self-contained LESSON PLANS for the piano teacher.
Give it a try, give yourself a break, and give your student a shot at success.

HAND POSITIONS: v means "one skipped key between thumb and 2"
TRIAD INVERSION SYMBOLS: Three part symbol revolutionizes the approach to this vexing issue (same for either hand).
For example: Fv2 for the Right Hand
-F means F Position (lowest finger on F)
-v means "one skipped key between thumb and 2"
-2 is the finger/note to play in the middle. (Top and bottom notes/fingers 1 and 5 are easy to understand, and not a problem.)

These are the exact same sheets I use with my own piano students, based on my exrience with great kids who, I feel, deserve to have a POSITIVE and EFFECTIVE PIANO LESSON EXPERIENCE.  What makes these sheets unique is that everything the student needs to know is printed on the page.

Top 5 advantages of using scottnotes/V:

1. student doesn't have to tediously "figure out" the piece before they play it--playing (and fun) comes first!
2. you don't have to correct wrong fundamental technique:  finger numbers (including #'s and b's) and hand positions. Focus on what's really important instead (hand/wrist/arm technique, coordination, expression, balance, dynamics, tone, touch, rhythm, tempo, articulation, emotion).
3. Weak/poor "music readers" are not made to feel even worse. This approach gives them a shot at making music. "Play music first, then develop skills" is an approach that has worked for me. Students (and their parents) LOVE it.
4. improves the quality of your student/teacher interaction by reducing negativity ("corrections" or "criticism"). It's not YOU correcting the student--it's the "page" itself.
5. Not only is it more POSITIVE, it's a more EFFECTIVE interaction between teacher and student. Students play so much more music that the old way of reading/figuring out, then playing is seen for what it is: outdated, out of touch, ineffective, no fun, unrealistic, delusional, and punitive.

Modern Piano Solos (Catherine Rollin, Robert Vandall, Martha Mier, et al)
I'd really love to share my scottnotes/V versions of the totally awesome piano music by Catherine Rollin, Martha Mier, Robert Vandall, George Peter Tingley, Chris Goldston, E. L. Lancaster, Kathy Holmes, Claudette Hudelston, Carolyn Miller, and Dennis Alexander, and others, but those copyrights are not available at the present.

CHRISTMAS MUSIC COLLECTIONS
On the bright side, scottnotes/V collections of Christmas music are awesome!
-First year students will play a dozen of the best songs, in mostly Middle C Position, with some C position.  "Carol of the Bells" is also included and is usually the crowning achievement for the student who at that point has only been in lessons for less than 4 months.
-Second year students will play 25 songs with big and gratifying sound of RH melody and LH Root Position (mostly) triads, including an impressive "Carol of the Bells"
-Third year students will play the same 25 songs with the more sophisticated and full sound of RH Melody and smooth LH triad inversions and accompaniment patterns.  And, of course, "Carol of the Bells" is even more impressive.

About the Arranger
Scott Camp studied jazz piano and improvisation at the University of Tennessee under the direction of Jerry Coker, before continuing jazz piano and jazz composition at New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, and two years of doctoral study in music theory and composition at the University of Iowa.  Scott has taught piano and music theory in several communities including Cambridge, MA, Iowa City, IA, Kansas City, MO, Kansas City, KS, and Asheville, NC.  Scott has also served as pianist/choir director for 20 years.  Currently Scott and his wife Patsy live on Hilton Head Island, SC and have released two albums/CDs of original music on itunes, Spotify, amazon.com and other music sites.  Scott's performances and those of his students are well documented on youtube.

I'd love for more teachers to be happier in their lessons, and for more students to be happier by playing better, playing more music, and sticking with piano lessons longer to go as far as possible!

I'd love to hear from you with questions or comments:
