Text Translated by Marsha Genensky.

Medieval carol from the early 15th century English ms Cambridge, Trinity College O.3.58 (Trinity Roll), text in late Middle English. The gentle and reverent song in honor of the virgin Mary shows both sides of 15th-century English polyphonic style: flowing rhythmic filigree work along with rich triadic harmony. Performance: the burden is sung with full choir at the beginning and end of the carol, as well as between the verses, which are, ideally, sung by soloists. These carols would have served a paraliturgical function, possibly accompanying processions. Suitable for male or female voices in close range; transpose to any suitable key. As transcribed, edited and sung by Anonymous 4 on their cd The Cherry Tree.
