The German cellist Georg Goltermann (1824-2898) wrote virtuoso cello music for his own use. Many of his eight concertos for cello and orchestra have slipped out of the standard 21 st Century repertoire, but his Third Concerto, published in 1868 as Opus 51, is still a particular favorite for cellist to study and perform. It was designed to display a cellist's beautiful cantilena as well as brilliant playing in thirds and octaves and the always-evident up-bow staccato. Along with works bu Karl Davydov and David Popper, Goltermann's concertos form an essential part in developing the cellists DNA needed to play the great cello repertoire of Schumann, Dvorak, Lalo, Saint-Saens and Tchailovsky definitively.
