The main theme was written by composer Ramin Djawadi, who was told to create a theme that portrayed a journey. During the composition of the Game of Thrones Theme, Djawadi was also briefed to avoid flutes and violins, as the director believed them to be overused in the genre. The final version of the Game of Thrones Theme features lower strings playing a riff and a choir of female voices as well as a dulcimer and kantele.
