This intense setting of the hymn "From Depths of Woe" (AUS TIEFER NOT) by Martin Luther (1483-1546) was originally composed by Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750) for organ as a part of his Clavier-Übung III (Keyboard Practice III). It is a unique six-part setting in which four voices are played by the hands and two by the feet. Bach places the melody of the hymn in the top pedal part. Scored for two trumpets, two French horns, two trombones, Euphonium, and Tuba, this arrangement for Brass Choir places the chorale melody (cantus firmus) in the Trombone 2 part. This part is doubled by a French horn so that the hymn tune stands out from the thick polyphony. The original setting has been transposed down a major third.
