In 1836 Chopin introduced the term "ballad" into piano music with the publication of his Ballad op. 23, although up to then it had only been used in literature and in vocal music. Indeed, all four of Chopin's ballads have the character of a dramatic story: the musical thread is spun with increasing tension throughout the work, reaching a powerful climax at the end. Following the "Preludes", we have now thoroughly re-evaluated this edition and revised it to include the latest scholarly findings. The most significant ones are documented in the printed critical apparatus; the detailed version can be downloaded from the Internet.

  • December 27, 2020 Not thrilled with the new edition!

I don’t like all the changes Henle has made to the third Ballade! I much prefer the original version. The same can be said of the revised Barcarolle not in this collection. Why would these new versions be released when pianists have been playing the originals for centuries now...

Learning a ballade is undertaking a new journey. Learning one is a long process but their audience appeal is incredible and eveyone loves these very serious, deep masterworks. The fourth ballade (F minor) has the most brilliant of the four codas. The 1st ballade is my favorite and is the...

most famous. The 3rd is maybe the easiest but it is certainly very difficult also. I would suggest learning several of Chopin's Etudes, Nocturnes, and when you have played a Scherzo, you're ready. These pieces are for the most advanced of Chopin players.
