"Early folksongs from the British Isles still captivate listeners both in their countries of origin and throughout the world with their beautiful, simple melodies, and depth of emotion. This is evident not least of all in the renditions of many populat folksongs as international hits by artists such as Joan Baez, Sinead O'Connor, The Dubliners, or Peter Paul & Mary. Singers on the classical stage such as Alfred Deller and Andreas Scholl have also made some of these melodies a part of their repertoire.

The present selection of songs with their often melancholy texts about love, death, and sadness reveal great beauty and powerful feelings through their clear melodic writing and as a result harmonize perfectly with the pure tone of the recorder.

The pieces in this collection were arranged so that all the voices in a recorder quartet are equally challenged. Unlike common practice, the melody part is not conitnuously played by the top voice but instead moves among the instruments and the soprano recorder is often involved in the accompaniment.

I would be pleased if these folksongs were to enrich the repertoire of many recorder ensembles." (Ortrud Hommes)
