The “Flower Duet” from 19th-Century French composer Delibes’ best-known opera has been sensitively set by string music professional, Doris Gazda. This gorgeous tune became phenomenally well-known as the result of its use in a British Airways commercial, and will be recognized by students from its many uses in films and TV shows, including The Simpsons.
Lakmé is an opera in three acts by the French composer Léo Delives (1836-1891). It takes place in India during the years that the British occupied the country and is the story of Gerald, a young British army officer who falls in love with Lakmé, the daughter of a Brahmin priest. As is common in opera stories, the love between Lakmé and Gerald is thwarted by Lakmé's father. Gerald returns to his army post, and Lakmé eats a poisonous plant and dies. One of the most famous songs in this opera is the "Flower Song," which is sung by Lakmé and her servant, Millika, in a beautiful temple garden. The song is part of the standard opera repertoire. It became famous when it was heard by millions on television on commercials for British Airways. It has been used in movies and in TV shows such as The Simpsons. When you play Flower Song, try to use long, legato bow strokes and a continuous vibrato. Listen to the orchestra as it weaves through the melodic and harmonic lines and make your part blend in with the entire group.
