Synopsis:
Opera in One Act. Firebird Motel tells the story of an eventful night among the hopeless down-and-out denizens of a seedy semi-residential motel in the Mojave Desert. The motel is both a haven of last resort and a death trap for hapless young women. The motel is haunted by the ghost of Julie, a beloved resident who recently disappeared in the desert, and by a predatory cop, Trooper, whom everyone believes is responsible for her disappearance. Ivan, a chronically depressed night clerk, watches helplessly as Trooper demands sexual favors from his next victim, Corina. Julie makes a ghostly visit, warning Ivan of Trooper's intentions; Ivan transfers his romantic intent from Julie to Corina, and he and Nova, an earth-mother type and long-time resident of the motel, attempt to save Corina. The climax comes in a fatal shoot-out in the dark. Ivan confesses that he shot Trooper with Julie's gun. Julie's voice is heard, as Corina and Ivan plan to escape together as the sun rises.
