The music is good if you can follow what is going on. The reason for the book is to learn not just to listen to something that is too hard. More explanation would be good.

I bought this for my son who is an 11 year old cello player. He loves the cello and loves playing everything from Bach to Stephen Foster; additionally he has excellent pitch. However i have tried to encourage him to just "jam" once in a while, to try and follow...

along with the music while listenting to blue grass or the Greatful Dead or whatever, and he just can't get there. So i thought this would be good. I probably should have asked his teacher before i bought the book...anyway his teacher said that Ian needed another year or two of careful instruction before introducing the "improv". Anyhow, thanks.

Now that I'm starting to "get it", improvising doesn't seen quite as scary. I really like this CD, and listening to Geoffrey ( because he's fun and I think really good. I think it would be helpful to also have a second recording of each piece, with only...

the background musicians playing (like music minus one).
