Although most know this was written for the USAF Band, here are some interesting facts from a personal chat with Smith himself (I met him at the Midwest B/O Clinic in Chicago, 1984): Horn players Smith and CMSgt. Johnny Woody (Principal, USAFB) were college roommates (KU), and Woody "always...

played a little better." Smith wrote this piece, basically Horns with band accompaniment, as not only a tribute to his friend but to exact some "musical revenge" (his eye twinkled). His favorite duet combo was always (duh) piccolo and bassoon, the latter being his daughter's instrument. His friendships led to some of the cadenza soli: MSgt. Robert Daniel, Tuba; CMSgt Brian Bowman, Euphonium. Meeting him was a joy; what a delightfully courteous man.
