This is a great book for any horn player, but perhaps it is even more useful for composers. And not just avant-garde composers. This book contains a long list of 'special effects' for the horn. Many are obvious, or are obvious variations on more basic techniques (half-valve glissandos...

- for example). But there are some surprises there too - whistles on the mouthpieces for example. Of equal importance is the clear and standardised notation. For the first time I've realised exactly what some of the stranger bits of notation I've come across actually mean. The accompanying CD is very helpful - not only can you hear the effects, but the examples given are generally musical too. Which is sometimes quite an achievement. A word of warning - I would be a much better player had I not spent most of my formative years trying to play two notes at once. I just wanted to know what it sounded like.
