Chopin succeeded in doing something truly remarkable with his two cycles of Etudes op. 10 and op. 25, published in 1833 and 1837 respectively. Probably no one before him had composed technical practice pieces that at the same time reached such musical heights. Chopin's Etudes are character pieces that are full of tension, written for the concert hall. The virtuosic works, including long-running hits such as the “Revolutionary Etude” op. 10 no. 12 belong to the pianist's core repertoire. In addition to the two cycles op. 10 and op. 25, our Urtext edition also contains three Etudes without opus number, which Chopin composed for a Parisian piano method in 1840: wonderfully lyrical miniatures, which can hold their own with the 24 grand studies.

  • August 15, 2011 Henle is wonderful, as usual.

I think Henle is probably the most authentic and trusted edition out there, and the etudes keep up that reputation. This is a set of wonderful and challenging music, and I think it's a necessity for any pianist to have studied some of these. Magnificent music, authentic edition.

  • June 04, 2009 Henle editions are the absolute best

Henle editions are noted for their historical accuracy but also for the quality of their manuscripts. This edition does not dissapoint. I have recently just come back to studying the piano after having stopped for a large number of years. Prior to stopping I have learned some of the etudes...

. In attempting to re-strengthen my technique I turned to Chopins Etudes. The Chopin etudes are standard in the pianist repertoire and no pianist training is complete without these etudes. While I agree that these etudes are difficult what etude is easy to begin with? Etudes are designed to address problems in piano technique so if you are looking to gain that technique study these etudes and get this edition!

These are the most important etudes of the Romantic repertoire. A landmark in the study of technique. As a student of a professor, I have studied several of these. The first one of Op. 10 is important for right hand stretch, and 12, the famous Revolutionary, is important for strengthening...

the left hand. In Op. 25, 11 and 12 are also very useful. Even if you are early advanced, you can practice these slowly just for mechanics even if you don't plan on playing it in tempo. Highly useful book.
