At first, it all sounds very easy. The notes leap through and over one another as if conjured up by a magician. However, nothing goes quite as smoothly as it seems, and here and there the music snags; notes get in each other's way and somehow it all gets somewhat out of hand. Our young Harry Potter still has a lot to learn Ligeti has a brilliant grasp of how to capture the essence of this scene in music. With a generous portion of wit and reminiscences of 'minimal music' a la Steve Reich, the composer allows the story to unfold and is effortlessly successful in creating one of the most difficult pieces in the entire piano literature. Tempo and hectic activity, active agitation and slapstick stumbling: this all combines to illustrate 'The Apprentice Wizard'.

  • February 26, 2016 One wrong note, otherwise...

On page 20, Etude 9, meas. 20, there is a dyad in the left hand, middle staff, treble clef, consisting of a G and a Db. The G MUST be a Gb, according to the composers rigorous and detailed working out of a precise and utterly logical pattern. Other than...

that, the music is your typical Modern Fabulous sounding Impossible-to-play Masterpiece. All of them are. Well, OK, I DID read through the second book way easier than the first book of these Etudes, but to perform them, as Jeremy Denk has done, is a task for perhaps five to ten people in the world. If you are one of them, or if you want to see what these sounds look like on paper, as I did, then purchase away. I relayed this wrong-note info to Mr.l Denk. He did not reply.

I wasn't going to write a review since I'm a horrible writer as you will see, but I know I just had to write a review. Never have I have heard such great contemporary piano music before.. Ligeti's Etudes are genius and very extraordinary. They don't...

sound as random sounding and as cold (not to say I don't appreciate them) like lots of contemporary piano music. They are unique and extraordinary that they wouldn't be classified into any catergory and aren't avanteguarde even and come after avanteguarde. If you are serious into playing the piano and want to be a professional pianist this is a must. If you can read music buy a cd with the music and follow the music along. For one who is studying to be a composer like what I'm doing should have the score as well. Buy the 1st book as well. Yes, the price is ridicious, but pay no attention to it. The music may inspire or and impress you. If you want more information about the music feel free to email me at
