The famous Hungarian composer fills his pieces with skillful, fascinating rhythms that shifts accents and speeds. The breathtaking disorder and turbulence of the keys in Desordre shows us Ligeti's enthusiasm for central African music, which would become his signature.

  • February 26, 2016 OK, so you wanna play some modernde musizk..

Nice graphics, clear instructions, practically impossible music, cream paper, innovative use of a combination of traditional and post-tonal musical graphics, did I mention the music is beyond hard, I think I did say something about that. Meant for the five people in the world who can manage this music...

at even partial tempo. Otherwise, leave this alone, unless you want to see what the ideas look like on paper, and perhaps want to emulate them in some fashion suitable for typical MM -level pianists, as I did. Beyond hard to play, into the realm of singularity.

These are classics of the modern repertoire, recently described as the most important postwar piano music. Only some of them can be played by normal humans, but they are all extremely rewarding.

  • December 03, 2004 great music

I just wish to say that these are some of the finest pieces of piano music I know of, from any period. As a pianist, I greatly enjoyed learning and playing them. I would highly recommend this music to anyone with an interest in piano music.

  • September 16, 2003 Very great music.. A must have!

I wasn't going to write a review since I'm a horrible writer as you will see, but I know I just had to write a review. Never have I have heard such great contemporary piano music before.. Ligeti's Etudes are genius and very extraordinary. They don't...

sound as random sounding and as cold (not to say I don't appreciate them) like lots of contemporary piano music. They are unique and extraordinary that they wouldn't be classified into any catergory and aren't avanteguarde even and come after avanteguarde. If you are serious into playing the piano and want to be a professional pianist this is a must. If you can read music buy a cd with the music and follow the music along. For one who is studying to be a composer like what I'm doing should have the score as well. Buy the 2nd book as well. Yes, the price is ridicious, but pay no attention to what may inspire or impress you.
