The tangos of Brazilian pianist/composer Ernesto Julio de Nazareth combine elements of European dances such as the polka and Latin-American forms including the maxixe. There are unmistakable syncopations of Scott Joplin's ragtime and, of cource, the cosmopolitan choros of his native Rio. These diverse sources of Nazareth melded into a style that is both uniquely personal and quintessentially of his time and place. Written in standard notation and tablature.

Villa-Lobos said that Ernesto Júlio Nazareth was "the true incarnation of the Brazilian musical soul." Ernesto Nazareth refused the popular designation of maxixe to his music. Instead, he preferred it to be called "Brazilian tango". The tangos became his registered mark. Among the most famous are Odeon, Brejeiro...

and Sertaneja. In 1893, in view of great financial hardship, the composer sold the rights of the tango Brejeiro for 50 thousand réis to casa Vieira Machado. The piece was an immense success in Brazil and in Europe, and it was included in the repertoire of the Republican Guard of Paris.
