In this new release, Brian Elias's large ensemble works are inspired by Greek Dance (Geranos), a 5th Century BC play by Sophocles (Electra Mourns). In contrast, the song cycles for solo voice (Meet me in the Green Glen) and solo voice and piano (Once did I breathe another's breath) are set to text by English poets. Bombay was Brian Elias's first home, until he was sent to school in England at the age of thirteen. By then he had already composed a fair amount- or rather improvised, as it was not until the need arose to make parts of school performances that Elias began properly writing his ideas down. In 1966 he entered the Royal College of Music, officially studying composition under Humphrey Searle and Bernard Stevens, though it was the experience of 'moonlighting' with the composer Elizabeth Lutyens he found most stimulating. Under her influence, Elias produced his first pieces, which created a positive impression at their first hearing. Since then he's gone on to receive two British Composer Awards.
