The boogaloo is a dance style, popular in the 1960s, combining Latin and rock styles. Matt Turner has taken the boogaloo as an opportunity to teach string students a new style alternative to the normal classical music fare, and he has indicated an open section for improvised solos. Players will love this change of pace, and the audience is sure to enjoy it too!.
Boogaloo music was prevalent in the mid to late 1960s in New York City, and featured combinations ofvarious Latin and rock styles. Boogaloo is considered a predecessor to Salsa music.Eastside Boogaloo should be played with a great deal of energy. A solo section gives students an opportunity to improvise using a C-major scale. Sample solos are provided, but performers are encouraged to improvise. The conga player may deviate from the score and create different rhythmic patterns within the groove. The guiro player should use two up-strokes on beats 2 and 4 throughout. Make it dance!
