You may know this hymn text, penned in 1931 by Percy Dearmer, as it is commonly paired with the tune union seminary. The poetry reminds us that our gathering at table is linked back through the ages to the first disciples, that we are connected to all who gather in Christ's name, and that the grace of this sacrament is to spill over into all our living. Bob Moore re-imagines the musical expression of the text in a simple and effective presentation for SAB choir. Women present the first verse in unison; men do the same for verse two. The Alleluias at the end of each verse present some vocal harmonies, with an interesting harmonic shift that is well prepared for the singers. The third verse is unison with a graceful descant. The piano writing is varied and well crafted. This anthem is one you will turn to again and again.
