Sigmund Hering (18991986) is the most prolifically published trumpet pedagogue of the twentieth century. During his career as trumpeter with the Philadelphia Orchestra, he composed over twenty etude books and method books for trumpet and trumpet solos. His 408 published etudesnot including the material found in his four volume Trumpet Courseare a monumental achievement. The best yardstick for seeing how essential Herings materials are to todays musicians is easily seen by the fact that most of his music is still published and used widely today. Dr. Thomas R. Erdmann has discovered two unpublished works by Hering that are being published now for the first time. The posthumous publication of this collection and Studies on Ornamentation for Trumpet by Sigmund Hering, serves trumpet students and teachers everywhere who want logical and well-organized methods for these subjects by one of the masters in the field.

His 408 published etudesnot including the material found in his four volume Trumpet Courseare a monumental achievement. The best yardstick for seeing how essential Herings materials are to todays musicians is easily seen by the fact that most of his music is still published and used widely today. In doing research for my book, An Annotated Bibliography And Guide To The Published Trumpet Music Of Sigmund Hering (Edwin Mellen), I came across the fact that there were only two areas in which Hering appears to have been deficient in his pedagogical output. They were: (1) exercises which develop double- and triple-tonguing technique, and; (2) exercises which develop and introduce ornaments to young trumpet students. Contact with his family led to my discovering a number of trumpet pedagogical materials composed by Hering that were left unpublished at his death. I found it fascinating to learn that those two trumpet pedagogical areas left untouched by Hering at his death were actually covered in tutorials he had written, but were left unpublished. These new books, Double and Triple Tonguing, A Complete Approach for the Trumpet and Studies on Ornamentation for Trumpet, are the first new published tutorials by Hering since his death. These books are presented here for the first time by Herings only publisher, Carl Fischer LLC. Both tutorials set out a course of study to learn the goals of each book in a well laid out and logically flowing manner. I would like to thank Herings family for their assistance with this project as well as Larry Clark at Carl Fischer for his invaluable assistance during the preparation of these manuscripts. It is my belief these volumes will be used by trumpet teachers and their students just as much as his previously published volumes.

This is a brilliant step by step book to improve your tonguing skills, which forms an important part of intermediate to more advanced playing abilities.
