When we think of flute playing and the sound of the instrument, we usually associate it with brilliant runs and feats of virtuosity; we picture it playing melodies of happy abandonment. But whoever stops to consider the long and arduous process of learning that lies behind the realization of such sounds? Over almost the past three centuries flute players and teachers have laboured to document their experience in the form of training methods to help guide and steer others along the way. This ,,Tutor and Study book has the same object in view. The first section, consisting only of text and illustrations, offers essential data on the instrument and tone production. This selfcontained and detailed presentation of fact has the advantage of showing how the various practical and technical factors interrelate and connect with each other. However there is also a danger that the student, who is naturally anxious to get playing as soon as possible, could be disheartened and confused by such a concentrated mass of detail. To help avoid this, everything dealing basically and directly with the first steps of playing has been printed in colour. This appears in the form of brief directions for practice which give the most important elements of blowing technique; it is advisable to continue working at these until they have become almost automatic on the instrument. The student's interest in the remainder of the text will develop later: once he has become closer involved in the music, he will feel the need for more information to back up his practical skills with some of the background theory. The section of music text deals systematically with practical aspects of flute playing - problems involved with fingering and embouchure increase hand in hand with those of artistic presentation. In this section too the colour of the print has an important function - the instant recognition of newly introduced fingerings, articulations and dynamic gradations. In addition it points out special fingering and tone studies, which should form part of the basic daily practice material until they have been mastered - if possible from memory. In the other etudes, technical problems are introduced and dealt with in a number of ways. There is a varied assortment of music dating from both past and present-some of it is in two parts, in order to give training early on in ensemble skills. The book concludes with an appendix giving the rudiments of musical notation, together with conventional signs and technical terms. Explanations are brief in order to facilitate quick reference whilst the tutor is in practical use.
