Dark Passage, Duet for Alto Saxophone and F Horn Program and Performance Notes- Dark Passage was written for and premiered by University of Toledo student Allie Denham at her December 2010 senior saxophone recital. The composition is a musical journey that asks the players to explore a mixture of contemporary scales and harmonies in primarily a contrapuntal texture. To facilitate ensemble, both players play from the transposed score. Approximately 6 minutes in length, the work requires the saxophonist to play in a free and expressive manner in the solo cadenza portion of the duet, and the Horn player to hold a steady and clear tempo in the triple tonguing ostinato portions. Both performers alternate playing a lyrical melody that contrasts with the more forceful beginning and concluding sections.
