If you can possibly find another publisher, it would be worth it. This piece only goes up to a high C#, but the publisher decided to put some passages in treble clef. It would have been much easier to read if it only switched between bass and tenor.

If you're a serious trombonist, or an aspiring soloist, then there's really not much I can say about this concerto. You should know it. It's a must for your basic repertoire, and should be mastered early. It's a joy to play, and a beautiful piece of...

music in it's own right. You certainly don't have to be a trombonist to appreciate it. You need to be at your most lyrical (it has plenty of places for rubato, and individual expressive interpretation), good stamina, and range, with a secure high register (especially to maintain intensity when required). In the slow movement, don't be too square, it needs to be loose and jazzy. Actually, all the way through, some flexibility in style can really bring this piece alive! Experiment with vibrato to add colour, rather than playing with the same speed of vibrato all the time. This is one of the great Romantic trombone concerto's, in my opinion.
