Eugene Bondi (1953–1992) studied cello with Janos Starker and Gregor Piatigorsky. He wrote the Concerto in D for Cello and Small Orchestra for his student, Michael Lim, who performed it with the Honolulu Symphony in 1982. With the consent of Bondi’s family, Michele Winter has arranged this concerto for solo cello (or solo viola) and strings in order to bring it to orchestras lacking wind instruments. In this arrangement, while the solo part remains identical to Bondi's original, the piano accompaniment has been slightly simplified.
