A classic masterwork. I don't agree with his bowing ideas as they stray a long way from the 1960's edition. There is also a lack of fingering suggestions anywhere, and new tempo markings have been added everywhere. Of course these are all largely down to personal interpretation and...

so can be added/changed, but I feel the editor's views are too prominent. However the music should speak for itself in the end.

  • March 16, 2014 Why not to get this edition

This edition has so many bad bowings. This is not what Walton wanted. He edited the piece in 1960 and did not touch it after. Why this edition was republished makes no sense. I've played it for some of the best violists alive today and ALL of them play...

from the older edition (1960) and the strongly suggested to stay away from this edition. Don't but it!

  • August 07, 2011 A Viola Masterpiece

One of the most beautiful/difficult piece for Viola and a typical concerto for orchestral audition. This edition is quite different from the usual one because is an "Urtext" kind of it, taking the Viola part from one of the earliest versions, probably the most approved by Walton himself. The...

difference is subtitle but includes bowings, articulations, tempo marks. The writing it's clear and very readable.

  • July 06, 2008 Absurdly beautiful

This concerto is lovely... But very difficult... And the edition was excelent. My acompanist said that the orchestra transcription to piano was very good. I just wish the price tag was a little friendlier.

Difficult concerto, suitable for a professional audition or grad school audition. Highly recommended edition.
