Williams' Concerto follows his trademark styles in its challenging harmonic structure and use of melody. Fans of Williams' more recent film scores will find many similarities in this piece. As a trumpeter, this is one of the most physically taxing pieces I have come across, as it explores greatly the...

upper tessitura in all movements. It also provides a lot of rhythmical challenges such as the alternating 6/8-3/4 meters in the quick third movement. However, with all its different modern styles it is a very rewarding piece. Overall a wonderful addition to the trumpet literature and one that should be standard repertoire. Certainly not for beginners or the faint of heart--it will put your endurance, technique, and range to the test. I only wish there were more recordings of it, although the one that has been made, with Arturo Sandoval and the LSO, is amazing and essential for performers of this piece. For any advanced trumpeter, this concerto comes highly recommended.

I have personally performed this piece and it deserves more people to play the Concerto. It has diversity in every respect. It goes high and low, and it is extreamly lyrical and technical at the same time. It is truly a triumph for Williams' non movie music. Only complaint is...

that there are no recordings of the piece yet.
