In 1924 Janacek was impressed by the artistry of piano virtuoso Jan Herman. This was the first source of inspiration for Janacek to write a piano concerto. Janacek was not intending to write a concerto for orchestra but a concertino, where further instruments were added to the piano solo so typical of his austerity: in the first movement only the French horn, in the second Es clarinet; and then the rest of the instruments - two violins, viola and bassoon. After its premiere in February 1926 the Concertino was ranked among the most original chamber music scores of its composer together with the wind sextet Mladi (Youth) and the first string quartet.
