Rarely has an edition of complete organ works faced such tremendous difficulties, which result from the loss of all the autographs and the inordinate amount of errors contained in the scribes' copies. The Buxtehude edition stands out from the series of "North German Organ Masters" not only because of its scope. Rarely has an edition of complete organ works faced such tremendous difficulties, which result from the loss of all the autographs and the inordinate amount of errors contained in the scribes’ copies. Klaus Beckmann began his fundamental revision in 1995 based on the most recent musicological findings and documented in an extensive commentary (preface and critical notes). im Auftrag des franzosischen Konigs Ludwig XVIII. der nach der endgultigen Niederlage Napoleons kurz zuvor den Thron bestiegen hatte. Der Konig wollte mit diesem Werk Ludwigs XVI. gedenken - seines alteren Bruders der 1793 hingerichtet worden war. Die Urauffuhrung fand am 16. Januar 1817 in der Kathedrale zu St. Denis statt.
