Katherine K Davis, who was a "local" composer, has many fine pieces to her credit. She most often is known for her Christmas Carol, the "Drummer Boy" carol, but this piece deserves wider use and hearing. "Comfort Ye" has always been one of my favorites of hers in my 35...

years of music ministry, and one of the finest Advent anthems available. Technically it can be done by the "average" choir with some hard work, and a good soloist. The opening solo, on Comfort Ye, is plaintive and mesmerizing, and the choir's reply just as sweet, without being sacherine. The full choir picks up the motif in a poignant setting, with well crafted four part writing. Solid writing in a fugal section on the words "Break forth into singing" brings the concept of rejoicing to life, and the piece ends on the opening motif, just as wonderfully as it started.
