The most-loved Christmas carols for any choir!

Not all Christmas music is the same. Christians in Europe have always used music in ever new forms and mediums of performance to express their joy at Christmas. Christmas a cappella embraces England to the Czech Republic, encompassing music from Gregorian chant to popular songs, Unison songs and canons are just as likely to be found as traditional four-part harmonies or new arrangements for up to twelve voices.

All can be learnt easily and quickly with texts in the original language underlaid with singable English and/or German translations.

Graham Buckland is an English conductor who has spent the last twenty years working at various German and Czech opera houses, and now teaches at the University of Regensburg. He is also a composer who has recently produced two operas as well as orchestral and chamber music. His sacred vocal music continues the living tradition of English choral music.

For English-speakers the "Oxford Book of Carols" is the primary reference, and this collection does not replace it. However, the 171 pieces in the book include a very wide range of Christmas music, and much of it will be new (and welcome) to English-speaking singers, especially the carols...

from Germany. All the songs appear in the original language, plus English & German versions where needed. Layout & printing make the book easy to use, and it is good value. Improvements would include notes on performance (some mediaeval pieces have time-signature changes, so which speed & rythmn take precedence?), and an index of country origins (all the Polish carols, for instance). The primary arrangement is a puzzle - not chronological, not alphabetical - and the editor's musical riddle (N° 40) does not have a place in a general collection, in my view. These are quibbles, however, and should not stop any choir or choirmaster from buying the book, and using it until it falls to pieces!

  • January 03, 2009 Good Acapella Book

We used one of the songs for choir on Xmas day-Dong Dong Merrily on High- and the blend was good. Looking forward to trying out the other songs in this rather large Xmas collection of songs

  • September 27, 2007 The World sings His Praises

Excellent book for Christmas Concert 'The World sing His Praises' Good to have the carols in their original languages. Some of the English translations sound a little trite although probably accurate translations. Very useful book for finding the 'different' carol. Worth a good looking through!. Nice to have carols in...

the different Christmas sections, Advent, The Shepherds, The cradle etc.
