This work, by lacking an obligatory pedal part, is entirely playable on a one manual pipe organ without pedals, an electronic keyboard with pipe organ samples, a reed organ (harmonium), or even a piano.  While it would make for effective recital and lesson material a place can be easily found for it in the worship service where it could serve as a suitable prelude or offertory.  This Chorale is an extract from the Op. 10 Praeludium, Chorale, & Fugue in the same key where it is employed as the central, slow movement.  It is constructed in a rondo form (ABABA) and makes use of 2 themes, the 1st of which is introduced as an unharmonized bass solo, then repeated in 3 part harmony with the tune in the soprano.  The entire large work to which this Chorale belongs is built around a 9-note stepwise figure using the 1st 6 notes of the d minor scale.  This melodic curve is reflected in the Chorale's 1st theme.  A 2nd theme is then introduced and harmonized also in 3 voices, after which the 1st theme reenters as a 2-part canon at the octave between the outer voices in 4 part texture.  A section in 4 voices follows in which the 2nd theme is redeveloped.  Here the tempo becomes  faster by degrees and more agitated, only to slow down gradually to a single, very slow line before the theme has a chance to completely finish.  The harmony then resumes using a Celeste stop in the parallel major key (D Major) during which the 2 themes are combined in 5 voices.  This passage then closes very quietly.  Owing to the fact that many instruments are built with the downward range of Celeste ranks ending on tenor C, the parts for the left hand in this passage stay within the tenor octave.  When this Chorale is being performed by itself the ensuing 4 voice bridge passage which connects with the Op. 10 Fugue would, of course, not be played, and does appear in this extract from the larger score.  Performers will find this to be a very effective, stand alone piece relatively easy to learn and having a variety of uses.  In this work the stretch for the hands is kept at an octave or less.  Registration suggestions along with indications for hand division are included with the score.  Length:  57 measures.  Duration:  3:00.  Composers Bio page:
