A popular and creative method for teaching guitar to young children. This approach to learning integrates, from the very beginning, chord playing with note reading. The students start with easy one finger chord forms and strum accompaniments to numerous songs. Note reading is then methodically and carefully introduced. Two subsequent volumes complete this course. The method features Ron Wheeler's colorful cartoon artwork. A play along recording and a full length DVD also supplement this method. Written in standard notation.

I'm using this book to teach an 8 year old to play guitar. We're about 5 weeks in and he seems to enjoy it and is doing well. I had never taught guitar before, so had no idea what to do with a kid that young, but this...

book has been right on so far.

    Difficulty Level:
  • October 31, 2008 Good, but not great.

This method is a scaled down guitar method for young kids. It leaves out some fundamentals in order to get kids playing quickly. My complaint is that it never gets back to those fundamentals, neither in this book nor the second book. So the books are incomplete. If you use...

this book to teach, it must be supplemented with other sources.

    Difficulty Level:
  • February 13, 2007 Great for students with limited musical exposure

I have used Mel Bay previously but had not tried the Children's Method and have found it to be very "child friendly". It has a nice progression from chords to notes and thus far, I am very happy with the results of my student.
