Item Number: S0.307667

The hymn tune "Redhead #76," also known as "Petra" and "Gethsemane," is named for composer Richard Redhead (1820-1901), who published it as number 76 in his Church Hymn Tunes, Ancient and Modern (1853) as a setting for the hymn text "Rock of Ages."

Today, it is best known by its association with two hymn texts — "Chief of Sinners Though I Be" by the Irish poet William McComb (1793-1873) and "Go to Dark Gethsemane" by Scottish-born James Montgomery (1771-1854), who wrote more than 400 hymns, including "Hail to the Lord's Anointed" and "Angels From the Realms of Glory."

This arrangement of this simple-yet-lovely tune makes a fitting prelude, offertory anthem, or communion anthem for Lent and Holy Week services.
