Victor Kalinnikov (1870-1927) remains one of the "unsung heroes" of the great Russian choral school of the early 20th century. Every one of his relatively small output of 24 sacred choruses is a miniature, subtly crafted gem. This setting of the Cherubic Hymn, in particular, displays two contrasting sides of Kalinnikov's choral palette: muted, almost impressionistic "pastels" in the first part, and bright, bold "primary colors" in the closing Allegro section.
