Composers first began writing character pieces in the Romantic period as a personal, inward-looking form of musical expression, on a smaller scale than sonatas of the Classical period. Brilliant!
As a lover of Martha Mier's 'Romantic Impressions' series, I was thrilled to see she had composed now pieces in the romantic style. These are all beautiful miniatures (no more than two pages) and are very accessible for intermediate pianists. My favorites are 'Tranquility' and 'A Faded Memory'. Hope Martha writes a third book of these!
