Chaconne was commissioned by the Toronto Symphony for their fine violist Rivka Golani, and recorded by those forces on the CBC label.. Composed in 1984, it became, almost by accident, a celebration of J.S. Bach's 300th year. Colgrass points out that the work may appear backwards, in that variations come first, and the theme comes at the end of the 30 minute opus. We are pleased to make the solo viola part available on demand.
