    This work certainly recalls the neoclassical innovations of Ravel and Stravinsky, and perhaps to a limited extent even Bartok and Hindemith. Casella’s tonal control allies him more closely to the former set of composers, but his work is in comfortably distinguished company, including Ernest Bloch, Gustav Holst and Ralph...

    Vaughan Williams. To date, attempts to find a commercially-released recording of this work have proven unsuccessful. Notwithstanding the cost of the score and part (from an imported publishing house, Universal), the work warrants the attention of cellists who are in search of cello music that fills in the stylistic and historical “gap� following the first war decade of the 20th century (e.g., Debussy and Kodaly Sonatas [1915], Elgar Concerto [1918]. The work bears a dedication to Mrs. Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge, whose name graces the main auditorium of the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C.
