American composer Celius Dougherty (1902-1986) is best remembered for his art songs. Gracious and witty, they show a love of words, with texts ranging from the most elite English and American poets to a dictionary entry (“Love in the Dictionary”). With a deep understanding of the voice and the piano, Dougherty created a body of song literature that lives on in a steady flow of student and professional performances. This edition includes several songs that were previously unpublished. Singers will love “Review,” a hilariously detailed critic's account of a voice recital.

    Judith Carman
    Difficulty Level:
  • March 30, 2006 Something for everyone

This volume is a wonderful addition to available collections of the works of single composers and should be in the libraries of every music school and voice teacher. In addition to the thirty songs, it contains a short essay on composing art song (drawn from his writings, recorded conversations and...

letters to Judy Bender) that gives much insight into his response to poems of different kinds and how he set them to music, and also his remarks on selected songs (nineteen of the thirty.) These remarks comment on his choice of the poems and how they inspired the music, and offer considerable insight into his songs to singers who sing them. All of the most commonly known of Dougherty's two hundred songs are included here.
