In 2015, I was fortunate enough to attend the ISCM (International Society for Contemporary Music) World Music Days in Ljubljana, Slovenia. In the middle of the festivities, a small group of us took a day and went exploring the city and the Alps. The centerpiece of Ljubljana is Ljubljana Castle, a giant stone structure originating from the 11th or 12th century located atop of Castle Hill. Although this work for concert band is titled Castle Hill and was partially inspired by Ljubljana Castle, it is not a direct illustration of the Castle itself nor of the surrounding grounds, but rather a musical depiction of old and ancient structures and ruins in general. While driving through the Slovenian Alps, we came across two ruins of what appeared to be fortresses. One (unnamed) appeared to be a fortress that was bombed and left to crumble away from WWII. The other, Fort Hermann, is a Castle-esque structure that was partially burned down in the early 19th century. Exploring what was left of the underground tunnels and chambers was absolutely thrilling.
Castle Hill is built upon three themes; 'A' (nature), 'B' (castles/fortresses), and 'C' (deterioration of these structures over time - battles, fire, weather). The land was lush and serene before these structures were even built (‘A’ theme). While these castles and fortresses were relatively new and being utilized, they appeared indestructible (‘B’ theme - in minor). As strong as these structures were, most were not immune to the ravages of time. Through battles, fires, and relentless exposure to the elements ('C' theme), many of these once magnificent structures have crumbled into ruin. Over the passing centuries, nature gradually consumes what is left of these hauntingly awe-inspiring structures (‘A’ theme and ‘B’ themes in major).
Castle Hill was commissioned by the Northwestern High School Concert Band.
