EDITOR'S NOTE

Carl Czerny ( 1791-1857) was born in Vienna to a musical family, his grandfather a violinist and father a piano teacher. After piano lessons with his father at an early age, Czerny became a.student of Beethoven. Although he began a career as a concert pianist, he abandoned his public performances to become a piano teacher, counting among his students Franz Liszt. Asa teacher, Czerny wrote volumes ofpiano exercises and studies for his students, repertoirefor which he is most known today. As a composer of choral music, Czerny produced twovolumes of offertories and graduals, as well as extended works for chorus and orchestraincluding settings of the Te Deum and numerous Masses.

Carl Czerny's Cantate Domino, for SATB chorus, flute, 2 oboes, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, 2 violins, viola, cello and bass, was completed in June 1830. The text is taken from: Psalm 95: 1, 3, 11, and is translated into English as follows: Sing a new song to the Lord, sing to the Lord, all the earth. Announce his glory to the heathens, his wonders toall the people. Let the heavens rejoice and the earth be glad. Let the sea and all that is init make a commotion. Let there be joy in the field and for all who are in it.
