As a professional pianist, this book is enjoyably sightreadable for me. I would estimate it to be at an intermediate level for students, as there are intricate rhythms in a couple of the pieces. Out of the 14 pieces, I liked a few immediately when I first opened the book...

to play, but just gave a "hmmm" to most others. The next day, however, and especially the day after, the other pieces started to really grow on me and I then found myself playing them on a daily basis. The melodies are catchy and the harmonies are sophisticated but not gratingly dissonant. None of the compositions are in a boogie-woogie style of blues. The book contains a contrast of fast vs. slow pieces based on blues scale patterns. Kember uses a variety of styles throughout the book, so there is something to please your every mood.

One of my students came in one day with this book, and I have been using it with my students ever since. It is very common for students to struggle with syncopation. They often have trouble grasping the elements of style. This book helps with both, and at the same...

time they can master a piece they can be proud to play at recitals.
