  • May 24, 2007 Excellent score--but lyrics only in Russian!

I am very pleased with this sheet music in general--quality printing, attractive layout, easy-to-read notation, etc. The amateur adult student choir I directed enjoyed it very much. However, be aware that the lyrics in the score are only in Russian. (This was not indicated by Sheet Music...

Plus when I purchased the product.) On the up side, this allowed me to produce my own translation, using the literal English translation printed on the first page (facing the score) and comparing it with other existing (and often distorted) English texts in common use. The presence of the Russian lyrics in the score enabled me to produce a translation that captured more of the musical/lyrical unity that Ivanov intended in his original Russian edition. (For example, placing the word "crowns" on the musical high point of the piece, rather than "destruction" or other words often oddly placed there.) Buy this if you want an authentic score; be prepared to adapt it for English-language singers.
