A worship experience recalling the sacrifice of Jesus

By Mark Hayes

SATB choir
A worship experience recalling the sacrifice of Jesus. Composed by Mark Hayes (1953-). Choral, cantatas. Holy Week, Eastertide, Sacred. Choral score. Exaltation Publications #55/1093L. Published by Exaltation Publications (LO.55-1093L).

The thread of Christ as God's sacrificial lamb is woven throughout scripture. Perhaps the most vivid Old Testament example is Abraham's offering of Isaac. The New Testament reveals that Jesus was offered as God's sacrifice not far from the spot where Abraham laid Isaac on the wood. This Lenten cantata combines the distinguished talents of Mark Hayes (composer), John Parker (lyricist), and Audra Parker (narration) to trace the events of Holy Week from Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem to his sacrificial death on the cross. This stirring recounting of the final days of Jesus' life also includes an optional resurrection anthem, providing both flexibility and a joyous conclusion to the Holy Week story.

This cantata has provided a new and different worship experience for our congregation and choirs. By adding visuals and projecting these images in a darkened sanctuary, this cantata will bring to life the story of Jesus' last days and will help to create a most somber and yet uplifting Good...

This inspiring cantata consists of six numbers celebrating, in turn: Palm Sunday, Communion, Jesus in the Garden, His Persecution, His Cruxifiction, and His Resurrection. The music by Mark Hayes is very melodic and accesible, and the words by John and Audra Parker are deeply moving and valid, sensitively portraying the...

joy, the persecution, and the eventual triumph of the Lord. I found it sometimes difficult to sing the words, so poignantly do they portray the tragic moments in the life of Christ. This is an altogether appealing and unforgettable cantata. It captures the meaning of Christ's life, death and ressurection with the highest beauty and grace. I recommend it enthusiastically to competent choirs.
