In an era that tolerated, expected and accepted far greater variety of interpretation and tone than the current and persistent "new internationalism" approach that admits far less in the way of regional and personal variation among players and ensembles, violinist Arthur Grumiaux offered the unmistakably noble, lissome timbre typical of the Belgian school - here heard in a varied live program recorded 27 July 1961 that spans the Classical (Beethoven), Romantic (Brahms) and Modern (Stravinsky, Debussy) eras. Pianist Istvan Hadju, who often recorded with Mr. Grumiaux, provides accompaniment.
