  • September 24, 2012 The Only Adult Beginner Book I Use

I have used Book 1 and 2 for years and plan on continuing to do so. It's comprehensive including theory, technique, and sightreading. The learning songs are OK, and the "Challenge Pieces" are very nice. Students are able to advance quickly because of how the book is formated. I...

    recommended it highly.

  • November 05, 2008 Improved Opinion

My first impression of this course didn't thrill me, but having used the course for some adults who needed to move more gradually changed my mind. This program provides a very thorough, albeit slow, presentation of all of the fundamentals, using fairly interesting music in the process. It would...

be important to follow book 2 of this course with level 2 of the Older Beginner Piano Course, so as to cover the flat keys, which this course omits. One would only need units 6 and 10 of the OBPC to complete the cycle.

  • May 23, 2008 A Comprehensive Tutor Book

This is not a "been there done that" book. Keyboard concepts are carefully sequenced; tunes and studies are attractively arranged; applaud the careful use of technic, theory, articulation and expression. A "no frills" book that gets to the heart of pianistic playing. A great resource book that the serious learner...

can refer back to as they mature in this art. Have successfully used it with beginners from Year 5 up.

  • July 10, 2007 Better Choices Available

I found this book to go on and on without getting very far very fast. Unlike other Bastien materials, this series covers only half of the key groups. The authors recommend following up with their Older Beginner method book 2, but that back-tracks in terms of difficulty of music...

. I would recommend comparing this with Alfred's "Play Piano Now" series instead, which is better organized and more attractive.
