Bartok is one of the most important composersin the field of 20th century folk music. He devoted his lifetimecollecting folk music of Hungary and surrounding countries, and tried to fusethem into his own work. In 1945, he wanted to write a piano concerto for hiswife as a gift, however, he was severely ill with leukemia and passed away, leaving the last 17 section incomplete. The current version was done byBartok’s disciple Tibor Serly, completing the composition using the master’smanuscript.

My gratitude goes to Dr. Jiao Yuan Pu forthe adaptation of this piano work. During the preparation of NSO Seminar:"What is Composition I - From Folk Song to Bartok", we werediscussing the scope of works to perform during this event. Out of nowhere,Jiao asked if I would like to challenge this task, I then agreed without thinkingmuch. After actual tryouts, I find adapting Concerto to Solo piece is a processof deduction, the most difficult parts are choosing which note to remove, andcatering the feasibility of performance. The work successfully debuted by me onOctober 16th, 2016 in National Concert Hall in Taipei.

All musical terms and articulations in thiswork is based on the dual piano version of Bartok's PianoConcerto No. 3 by Boosey & Hawkes. Any pianistinterested, if seen fit, may add notes without breaching Bartok's originalintention.
