The major religious holiday known as Pentecost begins 50 days (seven Sundays) after Easter Sunday; pent kost is Greek for "50th day." Pentecost Sunday, and the two days that follow it, commemorate the moment, 50 days after Jesus' resurrection, when the Holy Spirit descended on the Virgin and the apostles who had gathered together. The gospel for the second day of Pentecost tells how Jesus explained to the Pharisee Nicodemus that God had sent his son not to judge the world, but to save it. This account of the incarnation and its purpose is evoked by several musical elements in the cantatas BWV 68, 173, and 174, the three surviving works written by Bach for the Monday after Pentecost.
